Volunteer Opportunities

 

HEARING ADVOCACY – Advocates fill a legally state mandated role to ensure that involuntarily detained persons in a psychiatric hospital have the opportunity to express their views regarding hospitalization, advocates support them through the process.  Advocates review patient’s charts, interview patients, and attend probable cause hearings with the patient.  Knowledge of mental illness is preferred. 2-4 hours per week, a 6 month commitment is needed.  Training is provided. HOUSING – General Office Assistant, clerical duties including answering telephones, filing, organizing charts.  “Community Friend” – provide home visits to newly housed clients to lessen isolation and enhance client well-being.  Landlord Liaison – telephone and in-person communication to mha client landlords to expand housing options with knowledge of current list of vacancies, renter policy, acceptance of section 8 housing vouchers etc. Training will be provided.  Contact Christina Brady at 714-668-1530.

 

HOMELESS MULTI-SERVICE CENTERProvide support and assistance to homeless adults.  Plan and lead activities, which may include games, groups, exercise, crafts.  Assist with meal preparation and serving. Contact Tony Mundy at 714-668-1530.

 

HOLIDAYS, Homeless Programs – Prepare and serve holiday meals (Thanksgiving, Christmas), organize festive activities, provide holiday gifts. Contact Tony Mundy at 714-668-1530.

 

MENTOR PROGRAM – PROJECT TOGETHER –Volunteers mentors are matched children, youth and parents that receive mental health treatment through the County of Orange Health Care Agency, Children and Youth Services.  For complete details on becoming a mentor, visit the website at: http://mhaoc.org/mentorprogram.aspx or Contact Xochilt Figueroa at 714-836-0355.

 

OUTPATIENT CLINICS – General office Assistant, clerical duties include answering telephones, filing, organizing charts, scheduling appointments.  Knowledge of general office operations and interpersonal communication skills a plus.  Volunteers must sign a confidentiality form and follow all MHA policies and procedures.  Hours are flexible M-F, 8am – 5pm – a 6 month commitment is appreciated.
